NW Ocala is best known for its sprawling horse farms reminiscent of the rolling hills of Kentucky. Some very famous race horses have called northwest Ocala home, such as Needles, Affirmed and Montbrook. Ocala is also known as the Horse Capital of the World, perhaps because it has more than 1,200 horse farms and is home to the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association.
While the large farms are certainly a draw, there are also several championship golf courses located in the northwest area of Ocala, such as Golden Hills (Ocala National) and Golden Ocala, both of which hold national tournaments every year.
