On New Year’s Eve, it was announced Burger 21 would be closing its doors for good. However, the lot will not be empty for long. Carmichael’s, the highly respected restaurant that’s been closed since 2005, will be returning to its original location. Almost 13 years ago, after 19 years of operation, Carmichael’s owner Ken DePasquale announced the Ocala-favorite restaurant would be closing to the disappointment of many. Back then, he explained how he wanted to, “step back from day-to-day operation of the restaurant.” It appears he’s ready to jump back in. Details have not been released yet but they should be soon.
Carmichael’s was one of the highest traffic restaurants in Ocala during its lifetime. As many as 200,000 meals per year were served; an average of almost 550 per day. It’s unclear the exact reason for parting ways with the up-scale burger chain, as DePasquale, “declined to discuss details of the separation.” He cited a confidentiality agreement with the chain as his reasoning.
Ocala residents are already buzzing over the announcement. “Wonderful news,” said Nancy Francis. “Loved their orange rolls and cheese grits.” Others explained that Carmichael’s is a family friendly restaurant perfect for an “after-church brunch.”
Only time will tell if the establishment can return to its former glory. For more details on the story, visit Ocala.com.
