There has been a slow transformation over the past few decades in the West Silver Springs Place neighborhood that has left the area as a less than desirable residential place. Crime is up and it is no longer the safe neighborhood that it once was. Residents of the community spoke during a recent City Council meeting requesting a commitment from city officials to "help return the entire West Silver Springs Place neighborhood back to...a clean and safe environment."
The neighborhood that was once home to healthcare professionals, teachers, local shop owners and more, is now full of deteriorated buildings and what is perceived as a lack of code enforcement response. The turnaround of the neighborhood will require the efforts of many city officials, especially police and code enforcement. The neighborhood is located only two blocks from downtown, but it feels like a world away.
The mayor has committed to following up with code enforcement issues as well as to implementing a better means to regulate car traffic in the area. He said Ocala Police Department officers well regularly pass through the area on their patrol routes, and that the neighborhood would be added to the annual Mayor's Spring Cleanup in April.
