Locally-trained Marion County horses recently gave Ocala yet another reason to be proud of it horse culture.
The Breeder's Cup Distaff that took place last week featured a photo finish between two horses, both of which were from Marion County. Beholder beat out Songbird by just inches, and the prize-winning horse was broken locally by Raul Reyes' Kings Equine for Spendthrift Farm.
Beholder has now won three Breeder's Cup races, which is more than any other horse in the competition's history, and the horse is also a three-time Eclipse champion.
The Breeder's Cup, which is a four-day race at the Arcadia in California, featured two wins from Marion County-connected horses, but a total of five Marion County-trained horses competed out of the total 15 horses in the cup.
The race was considered one of the best in Distaff history. Ocala-trained horses are not new to the competition circuit or to winning. Ocala is, after all, prime horse country.
